La limpia
2022 - ongoing
In this series, I perform una limpia with an egg, a Pre-Columbian cleansing ritual in which eggs are run along the body to absorb contamination and distress, cracked open in water to reveal the evil, and then flushed to expel those feelings. As I am cleansed and reset by the ritual, my body is transformed into impossible distortions and dissolved into the landscape. I treat the body as it is: material, permeable, and perishable; and as it can only be in my images: elastic, distorted, subsumed into the environment.
Through film photography and analog effects like mirrors, I capture the illusion of being embraced by the landscape. By rejoining myself to the land, I am seeking out the Earth as a mother to us all, my own mother, and the possibility of myself as a mother. But like some mother-daughter relationships, I also experience tumult, roughness, and even danger. My images are a wish to return, to the mother, to the Earth, to simplicity, to oneness.
